Founding member and singer for legendary Bay-Area avant-garde artists The Residents, Randy Rose emerged under this moniker back in 2010 along with Chuck & Bob (…& Carlos and eventually Rico) finally revealing themselves to the world as a capable touring power-trio.
While embarking on a trilogy of world tours (Talking Light, Wonder of Weird, Shadowland) to commemorate their 40th anniversary and simultaneously hard at work promoting the Residents documentary ‘Theory of Obscurity’ (Directed by award-winning filmmaker Don Hardy), Randy was spending his free time with Don to create a couple series’ of short web videos which quickly became a sort of documentary in itself. For the first time we had an intimate look into the life of a bona-fide Resident!
The web series’ started with “In My Room” which gave a glimpse into Randy Rose’s home. After a few episodes the series quickly took a sharp turn giving us Randyland: a 143-part (!) spin-off series to ‘In My Room’ in which Randy takes us on a series of manic adventures through his life. The stories are usually told while sitting in his extremely pink bedroom. The viewer is treated to stories of alien abduction to inflatable sheep, even guest starring some recognizable names from Residents history (including Joshua Raoul Brody). Eventually Randy’s focus on his apparent life-long hunt for Bigfoot begins taking hold. As it turns out, Randy has some unfinished business to settle with the mythical woodland creature.
The Residents are an American art collective best known for their avant-garde compositions, bizarre costumes and obscured identities.
Their career boasts over 60 albums underneath their belts, numerous multimedia projects that pushed the bleeding edge of technology, several world tours, and permanent exhibits in the Museum of Modern Art. The Residents have cemented themselves in history as a truly unique gem of American ingenuity.
Visionary artist, filmmaker, and author Steven Cerio:. Created his own loving and sarcastic expressions of joy for three decades. His unique style helped set the stage for the neo-psychedelic revival in New York City. Devotees of The Residents will be familiar with his cover art for their, ‘Loss of the Lizard Lady’ lp, official tour posters and tour shirts for the group including the Icky Flix and ‘Demons Dance Alone’ and ‘Bunny-boy’ tours, vinyl figures of “Classic eye” and “Mister Skull’ for Toy Tokyo (NYC), target designs in “Dixie’s Kill a Commie Shooting Gallery” from their cd-rom “Bad Day on the Midway” (also used as their Stars and Stripes video featured in Icky Flix DVD),notable art and mask designs for their film “Disfigured Night,” animations in the “Birds in the Trees” video for “The Commercial DVD” which were inducted into the permanent collection of The Museum of Modern Art in New York.
The critically acclaimed Polish new wave band Bexa Lala was established in 1983. Before that, frontman Cezary Ostrowski led groups like Taz and Leo Patett, bands renowned for their rough and violent sound influenced by free jazz, electronica, and post-punk. Cezary Ostrowski has also played with Mikolaj Trzaska, Olga Jackowska, Marcin Swietlicki, Malgorzata Ostrowska and Piotr Bikont.
Hardy Fox grew up in Texas. After college he moved to San Francisco reveling in the free love days of 1967-68. He co-founded the much loved cult band, the Residents, where he was primary composer.
Hardy retired from The Residents in 2015 but continued to compose for the group through 2018. In addition to his work with that band, he has recorded as a solo artist under various names including Charles Bobuck, Combo de Mechanico, Sonido de la Noche, Chuck, TAR, among others. On the 30th of October 2018, at the age of 73, Hardy Fox passed away, leaving behind a massive legacy of music and art that will echo through the halls of time forever.
Ostrich von Nipple is a music maker based out of the Atlanta, GA area (USA). Often times, he will enlist the help of friends and colleagues due to their interesting sounds. Ostrich von Nipple’s music can be dark, somber, and haunting at times; colorful and wacky at others. The sounds are organized into strict compositions as well as abstract forms. Yet, through all of the different tones that are represented, the music always manages to remain a bit surreal. A sonic realm where nothing is truly as it seems.
In 2012, Ostrich von Nipple became Psychofon Records’ first signed artist. Since then, he has released three albums, two EP/singles, and (rumor has it) there is a lot more on the way. Always unique, never compromising. Working with artists such as Nolan Cook, Molly Harvey, Shitty Bedford and The Goons of Waxing Gibbous, Ostrich has certainly shown his range and ability to adjust his style to fit other artists. We at Psychofon Records are always excited to hear what new concoctions he comes up with, and make sure the album’s packaging compliments, nay, represents the music perfectly.
are respectively Brian Poole (Renaldo M) and David Janssen (Ted The Loaf), resident in the UK and friends since their teenage years they began exploring music together in 1969. After much experimentation they finally self-released their first album on cassette in 1979, this lead to a contract with the American label Ralph Records following the direct recommendation of The Residents. They released 5 albums with Ralph in the 1980s, including Title In Limbo, a unique collaboration with The Residents, until they called it a day in 1987.
Brian and David reconvened in 2006 and slowly began to record new RATL material. In 2012 they began a 4 year programme to re-issue definitive versions of all their previous albums.
In 2016 after a period of 29 years, to the surprise of many, RATL released a new album Gurdy Hurding followed in 2018 by an equally unexpected live performance in Vienna, their first stage appearance in over 38 years.
They continue to record and explore their decidedly individual (and some would say) unclassifiable sound world….although the words surreal, playful, timeless, ethnographic, electronic, punk and oddly folk-ish have been used in an attempt to describe their music.
Val Denham, born 14 November 1957 in Yorkshire is the kind of artist you’d normally expect to learn about only after their passing, when crates of wonderful obsessively detailed artworks and diaries would be revealed Darger-like to an unsuspecting public. Because unlike the majority of her generation of UK artists, neither her interest (nor her talent!) is first and foremost in self-promotion but in the obsessive creation of her art, the expression of her uniquely personal vision, her obsessions, her manias, her struggles and her life-path. Formally trained at Bradford College and the Royal College of Art in London, she has been originally associated with that true counter-cultural revolution of the late 1970s and early 80s which came to be known as “industrial culture”, creating a lot of the visual hallmarks of that genre and releasing her first own musical efforts via the then thriving tape scene. Apart from creating richly detailed works which deal with personal themes like her OCD, gender dysphoria and transgender issues, she is also an accomplished portrait artist. Her style is easily identifiable even though she has never limited herself to one particular mode of expression only, she is equally versatile in life-like figurative art as in abstract forms. Two volumes of her art and thoughts have been published by Timeless Editions out of Toulouse in 2012 and 2015 respectively and met with wide approval. Apart from releasing her series of handmade CDs of music Val has also collaborated with various bands on her sound works.
BeNe GeSSeRiT is a project from Trazegniet, Belgium. The two members of the band, Alain Neffe and Nadine Bal, have both been active in the electronic and experimental music scene from 1980 to this day. Alain Neffe is the founder of the legendary label, Insane. He has played in Kosmose, Sic, Cortex, Subject, Japanese Genius, Human Dance, I Scream, Pseudo Code and these days still concentrates on Bene Gesserit, Human Flesh, Messy Goes Insane, as well as the Chopstick Sisters. Nadine Bal sings with Bene Gesserit, Ornament and Crime Arkhestra. She also paints and writes.
The Black Lennons are a theremin, electronic devices, guitar and voice duo based in Spain. Their music can be psychedelic, dark, ironic, disturbing like a storm on the beach or a nightmare in an oasis. They mix abstract sounds, disco hits or avant-garde notes.
Their first Record Querida Lógica –2016- is a concept album. It is a story about classical thinkers and artists–Freud, Wagner, Jung, Wittgenstein- living in Costa del Sol, nowadays. This record portrays a dystopian, ironical, imaginative story, around The Black Lennons´ own unparlelled universe.
Julen Palacios is a guitar player, composer and singer boasting a long professional career with Spanish underground bands –La Familia Atávica, Los Cuantos, La Femme Fakir- and Silvia Grijalba, on her part, is the theremin player; she has played along with ambient pioneers IPD and avant-garde and rock bands like Las Malas Lenguas-. Not to mention her facet as a novelist and spoken word artist in her own right.
The Black Lennons have played at literary festivals – the Psychedelic Fest Periferias and La Noche de los Libros- and they’ve been included in collective albums along with Danielle de Picciotto, Jowe Head and Kim Warsen, among a host of others. During the last year they have toured Spain with Jowe Head and An Infernal Contraption and they have done several live shows in Berlin.
Jeff & Jane Hudson are a husband/wife duo from Boston who got their start in the art punk band The Rentals in 1977. The Rentals broke up in 1980 and Jeff & Jane relocated to Manhattan where they opened for Suicide and quickly signed with No Wave label Lust/Unlust. Their first single No Clubs was released in late 1980 and showcased a lo-fi avant garde all-synth band. The World Trade EP came next in 1981, expanding their brand of post-nuclear electronic pop. Their vocals qualities were distinct; Jeff quivery and drug-addled while Jane more detached and icy.
The duo reached their pinnacle with 1982′s seminal Flesh. Perhaps one of the United States biggest achievements in the entire “synth” movement of the 80s. The music was electro-pop employing early Roland synths and the TR-808 drum machine. Jeff’s lyrics flirted with technology and politics, while Jane wrote about cultural and psychological situations. Completely self produced by the band, the record has since been oft-cited as a groundbreaking and pivotal LP of the post-punk era, who’s original copies are now heavily coveted by collectors. Completing the discography is the Special World 7″ released in 1983. In 1985 the band stopped performing and recording. In 1986, Jeff started to direct music videos and Jane produced video art. Both were teaching at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
Bretts Milk is a musical mad scientist, bringing together disparate elements to create monster masterpieces. His latest concoction, Daddy’s Breath, is a perfect example of how his eclectic tastes manifest into records that singe and satisfy the discriminating listener. But Bretts Milk’s latest work on Psychofon Records, “Daddy’s Breath”, is his pride and joy; the culmination of his unconventional musical experience and features none other than Psychofon Records artist Ostrich Von Nipple. Mix in some guitar work by the brilliant Nolan Cook and you have a recipe for a sonic soundscape that will grab your attention and leave you wanting more.
Living in Asheville NC (USA), Bretts Milk has worked within myriad music genres for over 20 years, from electronic down-beat to experimental noise to glam rock, and has crossed paths with the likes of Mark Mothersbaugh (Devo), Adrian Belew (King Crimson, Talking Heads, Frank Zappa) and Claude Coleman Jr. (Ween).
Created by Atlanta-area mysterious being, Shitty Bedford and brought to life by Ostrich von Nipple, Sirius Bee and many more. One of the band members spoke out about Dead Man’s Underwear:
“Dead Mans Underwear began as an archaeological dig and ended as a botched tribute to electronic music of the 90’s. Some say it was Amelia Earhart’s plane, some say it was a moonshine distillery, others say it was a 20′ trailer home moved from Oklahoma to Georgia by a tornado. Was Amelia Earhart an amateur pornographer in Technicolor? Known by the neighbor folk as the blind diminutive trap for young fellas back there in the pulp-wood? The harpoon gun came later, and the soup thickened, so we consulted the Ensoniq SQ-2, heads adorned as once was the thigh of some whoever it was.
No photos were taken. But we do have the prints. And out came a dazed and crippled man, associated only geographically, and then he too died, then what was once not funny, and had become funny (at least to a drunk), suddenly ceased to be funny as the underwear that had once wrapped our faces was joined in the mask box by pairs that held sincere memories close to us. So it came to feel Shitty that we made mockery of the death of an unknown possibly genderless aviator once one who was close but inconsequential to most kicked the bucket unceremoniously and quite tubed. Then shortly thereafter it was all hilarious again so the switch was flipped and the electrons scurried about and then there was a Dead Man’s Underwear CD.”
There were groups like “Can” in Germany, “Nurse with Wound” in England, “The Residents” in the United States…and Déficit Des Années Antérieures (DDAA) in France.
Created in 1977 by three artists from the Beaux-Arts de Caen: Jean-Luc André, Sylvie Martineau-Fairy, Jean-Philippe Fairy; DDAA is a pioneer of all indie scene, experimental, and industrial 80s music and audiovisual projects. Approaching music in a completely unique way, and brilliantly produced by their own ILLUSION PRODUCTION label (with more 40 published references), DDAA was and is undoubtedly one of the most legendary groups of the French underground for the past 30 years.
In 2015 DDAA released their album “Defragmentation Des Pierres Qui Chauffent” alongside their remixed single of two tracks from the same album on Psychofon Records. The album and single are available individually, and a special collector’s package is available as well. “Defragmentation Des Pierres Qui Chauffent” is haunting and dreamy, with piercing vocals weaving in and out to create a surreal trance-enducing collage..A perfect intro to those new with their music and a definite fan pleaser for veterans.
In 2017 DDAA released the double 7″ set, titled “Dada est Mort”, a eulogy for our favorite art form. Dada est Mort is a display of harshly beautiful rhythmic convergence. Showing observationally precise commentary while at the same time treading the sea of the obscure.. This is somewhere around their 50th release since about 1979 (150+ if you count all of their appearances with other artists).
The Sima brothers, Ariel and Diego, formed their band “Farmacia” in 2000. Characterized by both humour and serious laboratory style at the same time, their live concerts are powerful and stellar. The acting element and the staging are outstanding points.
In 2008, Farmacia released their debut album “Nada de nada”. The song that gives the album its title was also the leit-motiv of the film “Los Paranoicos”, by Gabriel Medina and starred by Jazmín Stuart and Daniel Hendler. In 2009, Adam Yauch, member of the Beastie Boys, acquired the rights to distribute and edit the film in the United States through its producer “Oscilloscope Laboratories”. By that time, they had performed a couple of times in New York and also played in Peru (Lima).
This year, Farmacia also participated in a compilation of the legendary English label Søme Bizzare, the same label that keeps in its catalog: Depeche Mode, Soft Cell, The Coil, Einstürzende Neubauten, Psychic TV, Cabaret Voltaire and Val Denham.
In 2011, Farmacia published the album “Desorden obsesivo-compulsivo”. At that time, people could get their album in “Gel” pharmacy as a gift by purchasing a surgical mask and sanitizer in order to fight Influenza A.
In 2015, Farmacia participated in the compilation “MITRA Music for Nepal”, together with: Ryuichi Sakamoto, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, Dave Ball (Soft Cell), Wolfgang Flur (Kraftwerk), Steven Severin (Siouxsie & The Banshees), among others. It was an initiative taken by Anni Hogan, British musician.
More information van be found here.
In 2016, simultaneously with the departure of the 11/13 supermoon, Farmacia released “La sangre del sol y la luna coagulada”. They collaborated with Val Denham + Monte Cazazza, Godfather of industrial music that was evaluated in London in the 70s. Some of Farmacia many presentations: BUE festival (they shared a date with Massive Attack, Human League, Andy Fletcher); Fuga Jurasica festivals (at the Museum of Natural Sciences); They also played at Fundación Proa, Alianza Francesa, Niceto Club, CCEBA, at Pharmacy Gel and in various pharmaceutical events (organized by the Official College of Pharmacists and Biochemists of the Federal Capital and by Organization of Ibero-Latin American Pharmacists).
Mr. Locust Fellow is a composer and musician hailing from Atlanta, GA (USA). With the help of his friends, The Goons of Waxing Gibbous and Ostrich von Nipple, he has put together a sonically explosive debut album and musical ensemble!
Locust Fellow & Friends’ “Curse of The Baleful Caller”, is based on a simple but daunting concept. The music is composed to the album’s art, which has been created specifically for this project by the artist known as Poxodd. In other words; the art creates the music, the music paints the art, and together they tell a story. At times the music is light and free. Other times it is dark and direct. Ultimately, it is a collection of high-concept psychedelia, other-worldly trances, insect cooking instructions, barkers from beyond and modern tribal ritual music. With this concept of painting music to composed art, we give you Locust Fellow & Friends, and their steadily unpredictable sci-fi epic. Coming soon to Psychofon Records on 12″ vinyl…

Palo Alto is a French group formed in Paris in 1989 by Jacques Barbéri, Denis Frajerman, Philippe Masson and Philippe Perreaudin. In their early interviews the group insisted on their musical filiation with Tuxedomoon, and on drawing their inspiration from Made to Measure, a Crammed Discs label. They would later make explicit their interest in bands such as Art Zoyd, The Legendary Pink Dots, Coil, The Residents, Can or Cabaret Voltaire. Science fiction in all its forms (literature, cinema, illustrations, etc.) is a leitmotiv in the group’s work.
Ptôse has been created in 1979 by two French brothers, Benoît and Lionel Jarlan, and Pascal (ZZe) Elineau. They quickly founded Ptôse Production Présente, an indie cassette label, to distribute their music and interact with other bands or artists, like Ericka Irganon, who became an additional member. Between 1980 and 1984, PPP released around fifteen cassettes that nowadays are collectors’ items, typical of the early 80’s DIY movement: experimental compositions, minimal wave, weird packagings in limited editions… ‘Ignobles Limaces’, Ptôse’s first LP, was released in 1984 by AYAA with an iconic cover by Mark Beyer which helped to create a filiation with The Residents. After two other LPs published by Eksakt Records, the band stopped its activity in 1986. Philippe Perreaudin, from Palo Alto, has organized since 2003 the re-edition on CD of most cassettes and albums. In 2016 Ptôse came back to participate to a compilation EP: La Nuit des Sauriens (Creatio Ex Materia #2), with contributions from Edward Ka-Spel, Palo Alto and Klimperei among others. Invited by Palo Alto to share in their project Phantom Cosmonauts, Ptôse will deliver their first release since their retreat from the scene.

Achim “Künstler” Treu’s (aka UFO Hawaii) official biography starts somewhere in the mid-nineties, when, after some less than pleasing encounters with major labels, he found a friendly haven at the hip Berlin independent label Bungalow. From here, he was able to rev up operations within the duo project Dauerfisch until its untimely demise at the turn of the century.
This phase was followed by various releases under the moniker Künstler Treu on the well respected Cologne-based electronic label Eleganz (including Treu’s Hawaii-tribute Humuhumunukunukuapua’a, which is due to be re-released on Beats Beyond soon); a collaboration with electro-acoustic sound pioneer Jon Appleton (released on Crippled Dick Hot Wax); various collaborations with Richard Cameron of Arling & Cameron; film music works; a one-and-a-half-year-detour as member of the berlin-based rock band Mutter; touring as guitarist for Alec Empire’s Hellish Vortex; the re-interpretation of the famous children’s record The Space Songs from 1959; and last but not least his membership with the Neue Deutsche Welle legend Der Plan, whose first Album since 1991, Die Verschwörung, he produced and co-wrote.
Since 2005, Treu has been hosting his own radio program, the UFO Hawaii Radioshow. This program serves him as a playground for living out his long-standing passion for discovering and curating musical styles and forms – as well as for mixing, “what never really belonged together in the first place, but finally magically falls into place anyway,” in his very unique and personal way.
